Hominy Baptist Church is located in Candler, North Carolina, a semi-rural community of about 25,000 residents just west of Asheville with a view of Mount Pisgah. Hominy celebrated its 200th Anniversary in 2012 and has a long history of ministering with our neighbors. It is congregation full of warm and loving people who want to do ministry. Although our average worship attendance is around 160, we are doing ministry typical of a much larger congregation. We have a licensed childcare and afterschool program, prepare and deliver 25 meals a day to area senior citizens and sponsor a licensed adult day care program; DayStay. Members also volunteer at the ABCCM community crisis center and Candler Elementary School which lie on either side of the church property. We are in the process of building a new fully-funded $2.5 million Family Life Center to be completed in the Fall of 2014.
Hominy Baptist Church partners with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, CBFNC and the Western North Carolina Baptist Fellowship as well as 14 other NC and local ministries. Hominy has been a part of the 20 year Rural Poverty Initiative partnership with Nada, Kentucky since 2004, sending mission teams to and hosting guests from one of the poorest counties in the U.S.
We have four full time church staff; Pastor Dr. Joe Yelton, Associate Pastor (Education, Administration and Outreach) Dr. Paul Raybon, Minister to Families Rev. Melissa Hughes, and Minister of Music and Creative Worship Mrs. Kristen Dominguez. The staff works closely together and is very deliberate in maintaining good fellowship..
Our worship is a unique blend of contemporary and traditional music following the liturgical year with an emphasis on engaging the senses in a meaningful but personal style.
Our youth ministry is overseen by the Minister to Families and the Youth Ministry Team. There are about 20 youth with a core group of 8-10. They are involved in Sunday morning Bible study, worship, Wednesday night youth group and (at least) monthly fellowship and ministry events. They have enjoyed CBF retreats, mission trips, camping trips and concerts together.
