Hominy Baptist Church Celebrates 200 Years!

The year was 1812. James Madison was still President of the United States. The Civil War was forty plus years away. This was the frontier, with fewer than 1000 settlers west of Ridgecrest. There was no Asheville. Folks settled in places called Swannanoa, Reems Creek and Hominy. Twelve souls decided to form a Baptist church on the banks of Hominy Creek and our congregation was born.
Throughout 2012 we will celebrate the birth of Hominy Baptist Church in a wide variety of ways. Commemorations will include Bicentennial Christmas ornaments, Hominy throw blankets, a visual history, written history, handcrafted reflection quilt, Hymn of the Month, guest musicians and ministers, children’s area honor tiles, children’s coloring book, Candler School Day, a mission project and special youth activities.
